LAC Lugano Arts and Culture, the new arts centre dedicated to the visual and stage arts, aims to become one of the most important cultural hubs in Switzerland. It has been founded with the intention of enhancing and promoting the already wide range of arts on offer in the city and promoting Lugano’s identity as a crossroads between the North and South of Europe.

Created as a place where the various artistic disciplines are shared and where cross-fertilisation can take place, LAC Lugano Arts and Culture has borne witness, since it was architecturally configured, to its mission as a centre which is open and receptive to everyone, a meeting place between the arts, artists and the community. Inside the striking architectural structure overlooking the lake, there is a rich programme of exhibitions and events, music festivals, theatre and dance, together with a wide range of cultural events and a packed programme of activities for young people and families. The Ticino Arts Museum which is set up at the LAC, was created out of the amalgamation of the Canton Arts Museum and the Arts Museum of Lugano. Its three exhibition floors house the permanent collection belonging to the city of Lugano and Canton Ticino, temporary exhibitions and site-specific installations. A new concert and theatre hall with seating for 1000 people, entirely clad in wood and equipped with a special acoustic removable modular shell, both play host to a rich calendar of performances and concerts. It is the main site for the LuganoInScena seasons and LuganoMusica (the new name for the Lugano Festival), alongside performances by the Finzi Pasca company and the Ticino Orchestra (OSI), in addition to part of the Italian Speaking Swiss Radio  (RSI) concert season.

Visitors enter a striking hall overlooking the new Bernardino Luini Square, the largest in Lugano, and the lake. The structure is completed by other impressive areas such as the Teatrostudio, multipurpose rooms, designed and equipped to host meetings and events, the lecture hall and the Agorà.

In addition to this, LAC also comprises areas of the ancient Friars Minor convent which have been renovated and repurposed, a multi-storey car park below the Piazza embellished by site-specific works of art by the Swiss artist Felice Varini and lastly, a new public park which can be accessed directly from the hall.
